Aberdeen is the “Granite City” because the older parts are built of this hard stone. Loanhead and Rubislaw Quarries opened in the 1700s. Aberdeen granite was sent as far as America to be used for building.
Families in the countryside started to move to Aberdeen to look for work.

There was not enough space for all these people. New streets and houses were needed but this was difficult because Aberdeen is hilly.
