| What
is a Listed Building? |
A Listed Building is a building, which appears on the List of buildings considered to be of architectural or historic interest compiled by Scottish Ministers, through their agents Historic Scotland.
All buildings of interest erected before 1840, which are in use and remain largely in their original condition, are listed. Later buildings are selected for their individual character and quality.
All are listed in one of three categories, A,B and C(S): Buildings of national or international importance are listed category A, buildings of regional importance, or major examples of a particular period, style or type, are listed category B, and buildings of local importance are listed category C(S).
The lists are continually updated and revised. Historic Scotland is currently resurveying historic buildings by geographical areas such as cities and burghs, and occasionally by thematic listings of building types. Several thousand historic buildings are surveyed each year. There are around 47,000 listed buildings in Scotland of which about 7.5% are in category A, 60% in category B and the remainder in category C(S).
