Community Heritage Grant for Wallace Tower
Restoration and remodelling brings statue “back to life”

A £5,000 Trust grant to Tillydrone Community Development Trust’s ambitious redevelopment of Wallace Tower contributes to restoring the weather-worn statue back to a recognisable state with remodelling of missing and damaged features. Shrouded in protective hessian for several weeks to protect the work, the statue is now being revealed as the building is brought back into use for the community.
Originally located in Netherkirkgate, Benholm’s Lodging of 1610, originally built for Sir Robert Keith, was moved to make way for an expanding Marks and Spencer building during the 1960s. It was reimagined as a tower house using the salvaged building parts in Seton Park.
Douglas Campbell who manages the Trust said:
” The future of the Wallace Tower had been uncertain for years until the local community stepped in. This was a clear opportunity for the Trust to contribute modest support to a large project that gives a Building at Risk a secure future in the community.”
Trust Community Heritage Grants can be applied for at 75% up to a ceiling of £5,000. Further details and a Preapplication Enquiry form can be found at the Trust website.
Trust Community Heritage Grants are supported by Historic Environment Scotland.
